Nioh 3 is set to release on PlayStation 5 and PC this week, which is not surprising, given that previous entries in the series have launched on both platforms in the past. A new trailer for the upcoming samurai action RPG, however, suggests that this entry might not be console-locked in the same way, opening the door for a potential Xbox or Nintendo Switch 2 version.
At the end of the trailer, in small text, it is stated that Nioh 3 will have a six-month console exclusivity window. This is a common practice for Sony, something they had also done with games like Final Fantasy VII Remake and Ghostwire: Tokyo. The previous Nioh games were not suggested to be timed console exclusives and were never released on other consoles, marking the first time Nioh could see a wider release.
This places the timeframe in which Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja can port the game to other consoles as early as August 6, 2026. Of course, Final Fantasy VII Remake had a similar timeframe of exclusivity to the platform back in 2020, yet released for the first time on other consoles last month, so this timeline doesn’t indicate the speed at which we will see the game ported to other platforms.
Team Ninja has continued to have a pretty strong partnership with the PlayStation Console, with their previous game, Rise of the Ronin, releasing exclusively for the console in 2024. It was published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, which similarly published the first two Nioh titles. Team Ninja has enjoyed a recent marketing deal with Xbox; however, with Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty being announced on the Xbox stage, and Ninja Gaiden 4 being published by Xbox Game Studios.
Team Ninja is also currently developing Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake, which is set to release in March for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. While this is the first time Team Ninja has worked on the franchise, former head and founder of the studio, Tomonobu Itagaki, served as a special advisor on the original release back in 2024.
