“Of Course There Will Be More Hitman” Developer IO Interactive Confirms

IO Interactive has a few projects in development, such as the upcoming 007: First Light, set to release next year. Despite branching out, the developer has confirmed that more Hitman is on the horizon, though a timeframe is currently unknown. In an interview with Variety, CEO Hakan Abrak stated in no uncertain words, “Of course there will be more Hitman.” Right now, though, those talks are on hold until after Co-op is added to Hitman: World of Assassins, which continues to receive updates from the developer.

    Abrak stated in the interview:

So, of course, there will be more Hitman, but right now, I think we need to get to the other side of this year, and next year, you’ll get more news about Hitman co-op, because I think co-op is a really, really good extension to the universe, and will introduce very interesting mechanics and combinations in World of Assassination. But we will, after that, be talking about the next Hitman — because, of course, there’s going to be a next Hitman.

While they may not be completely surprising, IO Interactive has been developing the series since the first entry in the series released in 2000, so departing the series, at least for a period of time, might also be a viable pathway. Beyond developing 007: First Light, and continued updates on Hitman: World of Assassins, the studio is also working on a yet to be officially showcased game known as Project Fantasy. While not much is known about that third project, Abrak did tease:

It’s not announced yet, exactly what it is, but it’s a multiplayer fantasy project, which is extremely ambitious and really cool, and is something else than a gun in a suit. So that’s also good to have something new within the creative outlook here.

Unfortunately, Abrak did not state whether we can expect work on the next Hitman Entry to begin as soon as the Co-op is added, or if all their current projects will need to be approaching completion prior to development beginning on this project. Hitman has had more than 85 million players over the years, as well as sold over 25 million copies, so it makes sense why IO Interactive continues to see the series as part of their future.

007: First Light, IO Interactives’ next game, is currently slated to release on March 27, 2026. It will be available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
