*This news article will contain some potential spoilers for Resident Evil Requiem. These cannot be confirmed if it is accurate at this time.
GameStop has been known, from time to time, to list the exact wrong thing on their site when concerning an upcoming game (remember The Last of Us Part 2 killing dogs debacle?) And now it appears Resident Evil Requiem is the latest to hit this pitfall. In particular, this leak concerns a plot point that has been much debated since the title was initially announced: who you play as.
We know that players will take the role of a new character, Grace Ashcroft, an FBi agent investigating the death of her mother, Alyssa Ashcroft, one of the lead characters in the spin-off game Outbreak. The game has made a major showcase that, as part of this investigation, the player will eventually return to Raccoon City, the location of two of the original PlayStation titles, before the series moved away from that location. This has led to speculation that a second playable protagonist, in particular, Leon S. Kennedy, will be playable as well. Since he was the Protagonist of Resident Evil 2, the first title set in Raccoon City, this would make some sense, with several leakers seeming pretty confident this is a feature, but Capcom seems to want to leave this as a surprise for release.
Despite THIS, some other leakers have suggested that a third protagonist outside of Grace and Leon will also be featured, but there was much less confidence behind this claim. While this Gamestop leak doesn’t confirm the claim, it does lend some credence. In particular, this information comes via the listing for the Deluxe Edition of the upcoming Horror game. As players might expect, it lists that people who buy the edition get the season pass, featuring two story DLC, as well as cosmetic DLC. What’s weird is the Cosmetic DLC is listed for Rosemary Winters, who fans might remember as 7 and 8 protagonist Ethan Winters’ daughter, and protagonist of 8 DLC Shadows of Rose.
While writing this article, the listing was corrected to the following:
- Five costumes including Grace’s Costume: Dimitrescu
- Two filters including Filter: Apocalypse
- Four weapon skins including S&S M232 Weapon Skin: Apocalypse
- Two charms including Charm: Mr. Raccoon
- Audio Pack: Raccoon City Classic
- Files: Letters from 1998
Prior to this, users posted snapshots where Rose is listed with DLC cosmetics:
The first thing to note is the timeline of this, with Resident Requiem set in 2028, when Rose was a baby in RE 8, set in 2021. Her DLC for 8 was set in 2037, making the timeline suggest she will be a child at the time of Requiem. This might suggest that the timeline doesn’t add up, but another theory might be that she is intended as a more throwback in the vein of Leon S. Kennedy. Resident Evil 2 featured brief points where players took control of Sherry Birkin, who was a child at the time, with protagonists Leon or Claire protecting her through other parts.
Of course, that’s just speculation, and given that the listing was only featured for the PC listing of the game at the time I checked, but was not listed, or already fixed, for the PS5 and Xbox versions. Fans have voiced their thoughts, with obviously many showcasing some skepticism over the legitimacy of this post. It wouldn’t be the first time a rogue employee created discourse through a post on the GameStop website.
What we do know with certainty is that there are a lot of tie-ins coming for Resident Evil Requiem, including a branded Nintendo Switch 2 controller and Amiibos.
