Bloober Team, the developer behind the critically and commercially successful Silent Hill 2 Remake, has announced they have signed a deal with Konami to develop an additional game following the success of their first collaboration with the Publisher.
Neither Bloober Team nor Konami have stated what this new game is or the franchise it will be part of at this time. Bloober has a track record of developing horror titles, best known up to this point for games such as Layers of Fear and Blair Witch, and has previously expressed interest in developing more Silent Hill titles such as additional remakes or a new title in the series so this could be a safe bet for what this future collab could be. That being said, the team has recently begun to branch out with multiple games in development under code names, and not all are expected to be horror so the potential for this being another series does exist.
Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno has said in an official statement:
Konami, a legendary name in the gaming industry, sought a partner who could breathe new life into one of its most iconic franchises — Silent Hill. Bloober Team was selected for their expertise in horror and atmospheric storytelling, and in 2021, both companies signed a partnership agreement. In October 2022, during the official Silent Hill Transmission livestream, it was announced that Bloober Team was working on a remake of Silent Hill 2, widely regarded as one of the best psychological horror games in history.
The success of the remake proved that Bloober Team had perfectly captured the atmosphere and depth of the original while introducing crucial innovations. The game was well-received by players, earning an 86/100 rating on Metacritic and an 88/100 on OpenCritic, along with numerous awards, including Game of the Year 2024 from IGN Japan and Best Horror Game of the Year from the IGN Community Awards.
The trust built upon the success of Silent Hill 2 laid the foundation for signing another agreement for a new project. The deal aligns with Bloober Team’s strategic plan to expand its internal development division within a first-party framework.
Our collaboration with Konami has been incredibly fruitful, and the success of Silent Hill 2 speaks for itself. By sharing knowledge and experience, we have been able to create high-quality production together. Of course, we can’t reveal too many details at this time, but we are confident that fans will be just as excited about our collaboration as we are. We can’t wait to share something truly special with players when the time is right.
The team once again pointed to the title being considered a success by both publisher and developer, something that Konami made clear in January as the game celebrated 2 million units sold. The game had a previously celebrated 1 million units sold only a few days after the game’s release on October 8th, 2024. These numbers were achieved across the PlayStation 5 and PC platforms as an Xbox version of the game has yet to be announced. This sales number may place Silent Hill 2 Remake as the fastest-selling Silent Hill title of all time though Konami has remained quiet on this.
Silent Hill 2 Remake‘s status as a success for Konami could usher in a shift in their business strategy, having previously moved heavily into mobile and live-service titles, as well as banking heavily on their lucrative Pachinko division. Silent Hill had already received a major push for return from the publisher, releasing Silent Hill: Homecoming for free when Remake was announced as well as having two new entries in the series in development titled Silent Hill F and Silent Hill: Townfall. Konami has also announced a film adaptation of Silent Hill 2 is also in the works.
The bigger question here is will the success of the Bloober Teams remake opens the door for more collaborations with studios, or revives interest, in their other titles that have remained dormant. Metal Gear Solid and Castlevania have both not seen new mainline entries in about a decade with Bloober Team actually being a great good choice to revive the latter. Konami will also be publishing a remaster of Suikoden, Suikoden 1&2 HD which is set to release next year, perhaps another franchise that could see some revival should interest be shown.
