Opening up the Video Game Awards on the main stage, a new Star Wars title was announced. The game, entitled Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, is a single-player, narrative-driven RPG that will serve as a spiritual successor and possible continuation of the classic Old Republic Games developed by BioWare, being developed by Arcanaut Studios in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. The game’s development is being led by Casey Hudson, who directed the original Knights of the Old Republic title, as well as Mass Effect, during his time at BioWare.
The teaser trailer itself gives us very little to go by, as there isn’t any gameplay shown. The trailer itself is of a woman who lands her spaceship on a desolate planet, traveling from it on foot to the wreckage of another ship, all of which the camer keeping her out of focus. Finally, once inside the wreckage, we get a close-up of her eyes as we hear and see the iconic indicators of a Lightsaber being turned on out of frame.
While this is exciting, given its return to one of the most popular Star Wars settings, from the original director, it should be noted that no release date was given for the game during the trailer. Quantic Dream announced, with a similar style CGI trailer, Star Wars: Eclipse, a narrative-driven game set in the High Republic at the VGAs 2021; however, the game still has yet to be released and, in fact, has not received a second trailer since its announcement. A Remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is also in development from Saber Interactive, after Aspyr was removed from the project, also announced back in 2021. This is only to say, this wouldn’t be the first Star Wars game to make a splash, then vanish, if that were to happen.
According to the official Star Wars Website, the game is in the Early development phase. It quoted Hudson in saying:
I’ve always strived to lead very focused projects, with creative clarity and alignment among the team, and a crisply organized production planThat’s ultimately what makes it possible to deliver a game that meets high expectations. But consistently achieving that with large and ambitious projects – with ever increasing demands on scope and complexity — has been a lifelong journey of learning and improvement, and a personal obsession of mine.
Star Wars: Fate of The Old Republic is still largely an unknown, but we look forward to covering it as more information becomes available.
