After a massive showing last summer during both the Xbox Showcase and then the Ubisoft Showcase, with little new information following since, Ubisoft has finally dropped the story trailer for Star Wars Outlaws. The game will see players in a planet-hopping adventure across a galaxy far away and it is coming this year, from developer Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft.
Players will take the role of Kay Vess, a small-time criminal aiming to become bigger in between the fifth and sixth movies The Empire Strikes Back and Return of The Jedi. This sees the galaxy-controlling Republic still maintaining power with the threat of a rebel uprising looming overhead. This gives a window for several crime organizations such as the familiar Crimson Dawn and Hutt families to make money, while the Republic is distracted. This is something that big baddy Sliro makes clear in the opening minutes of the trailer.
Kay, on the other hand, has been marked for death by Sliro, making her the prime candidate for a suicide mission through which she MIGHT be able to buy her freedom, should she live long enough. What she will need to do and where she will need to go to do it is still mostly unclear, but the trailer does suggest stealing a scruffy nerf-herder that is encased in carbonite will play into this.
Despite focusing on the narrative, we do get a look at several locations that we will journey to. these include a vast desert with subterranean threats, an Amazon-like planet with overgrown shipwrecks and water traversal, and even some familiar ones like Jabba The Hutts Palace. There is no real indication of the depth of these areas, beyond their previous showing that offered seamless exploration across both land and space, with open-world design being a strong point of Ubisoft.
Best yet, the trailer has finally offered players a release date for this massive Star Wars adventure. Star Wars Outlaws is set to release on August 30th, 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Players looking to start their adventure 3 days earlier can pre-order or purchase the Gold or Ultimate editions for 3-day early access. Both editions will also include the season pass that will expand the base game later on.
