Suicide Squad Support Set To End In January

After struggling to find an audience for much of the year, Rocksteady has announced that support for Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League will end on January 14th, 2025.

In a blog post, the developer outlined the fourth, and now final season, which is set to begin today, stating that this brings about “the final battle against Brainiac.” This season will also see the addition of fan-favorite character Deathstroke to the title lineup of anti-heroes present. Despite all this, the game will remain both purchasable and playable for the foreseeable future. This is similar to another live-service title that recently announced the end of its support, Foamstars.

Today’s season 4 will additionally bring with it an offline mode, something that Rocksteady had previously stated was in the works. This mode will give players access to all the post-release content from the game without the need for an internet connection. This is intended to extend the game’s life beyond when support is intended to end, though there is no word yet as to how long the servers for Suicide Squad will remain functional.

Given the struggle the game has had to find an audience since its launch earlier this year, it is not surprising to hear support is finally ending, though it is impressive that it lasted this long. Suicide Squad was delayed into 2024 after its Deep Dive during PlayStations State of Play in 2023 was poorly received. Since much of the backlash of that showcase concerned elements that were already deeply rooted in the nature of a Live-Service title, this delay felt like it didn’t serve much of a function.

Upon release the game didn’t fair much better. This led to WB referring to the game as a financial disappointment only a few weeks later, suggesting that they would have a “tough quarter” in the wake of it. Later reports from Bloomberg put more focus on Rocksteady’s own struggles to develop the game, having never done a live service title prior to this and being revered up to this point for their Batman Arkham series which helped breathe new life into the superhero genre of video games. A silver lining is that the Arkham series received renewed interest following the release of Suicide Squad, driving many games back to what remains an outstanding series.

Similar to many studios this year, Rocksteady also suffered a layoff in September, the majority affecting their QA team. Currently, Rocksteady is involved in co-developing a Director’s Cut of last year’s smash hit Hogwarts Legacy, and hoping to begin work on a new single-player experience which if this whole ordeal taught us anything, it’s that WB should let them.
