Two classic games from the Game Boy era are set to join the Game Boy catalog on the Nintendo Switch Online today. The first of these titles, Yoshi, feels like good timing due to the green dinosaur’s inclusion in the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which is set to release in April 2026. We recently got our first look at the character when Nintendo and Illumination dropped the official trailer for the film earlier this year.
Originally released in 1991, Yoshi is a puzzle game that has some similarities to titles like Columns or Puyo Puyo while still being unique. Players attempt to maintain falling items across multiple rows, with the goal being to have Yoshi egg shells together to form them to help clear out the objects on screen, with too many objects piling up causing the player to lose.
Balloon Kid is the second game joining Yoshi on the service today. A side-scrolling game from 1990, the player attempts to traverse obstacles and platforms, collecting balloons to aid the player in the platforming. Interestingly, should you have a Japanese version of the Nintendo Online App, you will notice that Balloon Kid is actually replaced with Balloon Flight GP. Only released in Japan, Balloon Fight GP is an enhanced version of the former title released for the Game Boy Color, and later through the virtual console on 3DS, though again only in Japan.
The Game Boy Library is featured on both the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2, through a standard Nintendo Switch Online membership, making these games available to numerous players across both platforms, so they can enjoy some old-school gaming if they are so inclined to do so. Similarly, the augmented reality platform Virtual Boy is set to join the online catalogs later this month.
