Following a leak that Bethesda and Xbox were getting close to announcing the full title for the next Elder Scrolls title, the company has now officially done so. Now officially named The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, which Bethesda announced at the end of a video celebrating the 40th anniversary of the longstanding RPG developer. This video included a look back at the franchise over the years, before Todd Howard officially unveiled a title card for the next entry.
Todd Howard states:
You know, as we’re here in the 40th anniversary, we think about all of the games we’ve made. And you know, every day when I walk by this case, obviously I look at the games and think about them, but more so I think about the teams that made them, and the time and the passion that everybody put into the games.
And then what they meant to all of you, and hearing from you, and the time that you spent in them, how meaningful that was to you, and to let you know when we hear that, how meaningful that is to us. And so even though yes, we’re looking back, we’re also looking forward to all we’re doing, particularly with the Fallout franchise and obviously The Elder Scrolls.
You know, everybody’s always asking about Elder Scrolls 6. And we thought, hey, given the moment, what a perfect time to tell you what The Elder Scrolls 6 is actually called
Unfortunately, this announcement was then somewhat undercut by a tweet from the studio informing fans that “it’ll be some time before we’re ready to share more”. While it is great that we finally have a little more information for the title, we were first introduced to it at E3 2018 when a teaser trailer was shared, after which the title was not showcased again. Recently, it was reported that The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel is still at least 2 years away from release, making the wait a decade at least.
Alongside the leak of the title, which was stated would be revealed sometime in November, a setting for the title was also leaked. While Bethesda has yet to confirm it, the accuracy of the title lends some credibility to the claim that the game is set in Hammerfell. It should be noted that the Kingdom of Sentinel is featured in the northwestern portion of Hammerfell. The location has previously been featured in The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall in particular, though it has been featured in other titles as well.
This fits previous fan theories that The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel will be set around locations like Sentinel City and Iliac Bay, a body of water that separates High Rock and Hammerfell. It has also been suggested that, due to the big bodies of water in the region, this might lend to the inclusion of boats that the player can pilot, which would be a first for the series.
