With only 5 months remaining until Square Enix’s hotly anticipated follow-up to Final Fantasy VII Remake, entitled Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the age-old question of “Will we see the remake on another platform other than Sonys PlayStation?” once again began to make the rounds. According to Leaker NateDrake, in a post on Famiboards, the studio still has no plans to port the game to an Xbox console, or the speculative Nintendo Switch 2 at this point.
While this remains par for the course with how the remake series has been handled up to this point, several facts have changed for Square Enix and Sony’s relationship that makes this interesting to revisit. For starters, earlier in the summer Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy XIV would finally be releasing on Xbox after nearly a decade. While this news would have been big in its own right, it was compounded by a commitment to the Xbox console that had been largely absent for much of the Xbox One’s lifecycle.
Among the games that could be brought to the platform, Final Fantasy VII Remake was arguably the largest game that other platforms missed out on. We also know it exited the exclusivity deal between Square and Sony a year after release, still with no word on other platforms. The upcoming sequel has been confirmed to have only three months of exclusivity attached to it, which makes it seem they are looking at other platforms for release.
According to NateDrake in his post, this decision is being made solely by Square Enix. According to his post:
FF7 Remake is not a current plan. Could it happen, eventually? Sure. Is it an active plan at this moment? No. A Switch 2 release exists in the same way an Xbox release does. IF Square wants to do it, they can & will; but no such plan exists at the present.
This looks like it leaves the option open, should they want to release these games elsewhere, but have simply elected not to at present. It remains to be seen how other platforms will be incorporated into Square Enix‘s upcoming plans.
