Borderlands 4 And Mafia: the Old Country To Get First Look At Game Awards

2k Games has announced that two of their most anticipated titles, Borderlands 4 and Mafia: The Old Country, are set to be showcased during The Video Game Awards later this week. This makes a fair amount of sense as Mafia had previously said more would be shown of the game in December, and both titles were previously teased during Opening Night Live of Gamescom 2024, another event run by The Video Game Awards head Geoff Keighley.

Both the Borderlands account as well as the Mafia account took to X, formerly Twitter, today to post short clips in anticipation of the big showing which draws viewership in the millions. “Who’s ready to get their first look at the most ambitious Borderlands yet?!” was posted on the Borderlands X, along with the promise “We’re about to crank things up to the next level.” On the converse side, Mafia: The Old Country simply stated they will “See You At The Game Awards.”

Gearbox Development Chief Randy Pitchford also took to X to hype up the Borderlands 4 trailer, which he has stated will include gameplay. He has also stated that he will share a cinematic sequence that will be set sometime between the third game and this latest installment.

Both titles are slated for release sometime during 2025. In the case of Mafia, this might put it in direct competition with Grand Theft Auto 6, the juggernaut that it is, also owned by 2K parent company Take-Two Interactive. Last month both Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive insisted that the next installment of Grand Theft Auto series was still on track for a fall 2025 release date despite some speculation it might need to be delayed in 2026. While Rockstar is allegedly sitting on a second trailer for the highly anticipated next entry of their flagship series, it is unlikely to make an appearance at The Game Awards.

In the case of Borderlands 4, while a release date couldn’t be offered for either, Take-Two Boss Strauss Zelnick has stated that the games will not be released close enough to each other to become an issue. He stated, “I think it’s safe to say that we wouldn’t, and no one would, stack up huge releases unnecessarily.” In the case of Mafia, which was once glumped under the idea of being a ‘GTA clone’, a sentiment that has thankfully become outdated, might still see the effects of a Grand Theft Auto release regardless of distance from it. Of course, this is just speculation on my part.

This suggests though that both games could see release earlier in the year, or in summer, though nothing is set in stone yet. We will need to wait and see when the Video Game Awards airs on December 12th.
