Skies of Arcadia the classic JRPG for the Sega Dreamcast has received a new trademark, filed by Sega. This has led to hopes from many fans (myself included) that there might be some revival of the series coming in the near future.
The new trademark for the title includes bother the Western title of the series Skies of Arcadia, as well as its Japanese title Eternal Arcadia. Both of these were filed on the 16th of January while both were made public on the 24th of January, the website Final Weapon reported.
Skies of Arcadia has remained dormant for a long time, with the title having been released in 2000 and a Gamecube port released in 2003. There was a plan to port the game to the PlayStation 2 and PC, as well as develop a full sequel, all of which was scrapped sometime in the early 2000s. Since then the game has maintained a cult following of JRPG and retro enthusiasts, all of which hoping to see the well-received game make a return.
While filings like these often happen, sometimes just occur to maintain the trademark there is some cause to believe more is happening here. For starters, given the 2000’s release, this year would mark the game’s 25th anniversary, making it as good a time as any for Skies of Arcadia to return. Sega has also made a commitment to its older, once dormant franchises, announcing revivals to several older titles such as Golden Axe, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Streets of Rage, and more.
While we have no confirmation on this potential revival yet, two other beloved Dreamcast titles will indeed reach modern consoles soon. Capcom is releasing the Capcom Fighting Collection Vol. 2 which is set to feature several of their classic fighting game titles. Among those featured in the collection are Power Stone and Power Stone 2, a series of games that drew from Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. series and are fondly remembered.
Now, if somebody at Nintendo could greenlight a Blue Stinger title I would be so happy.
