Breath of Fire IV, the popular title in the classic Capcom RPG series, has returned on PC some 25 years after its initial release. Originally released in North America and Japan in 2000, with Europe receiving it a year later, it also received a port in Europe and Japan in 2003. Breath of Fire IV would receive a sequel in 2002 in Japan and 2003 in North America and Europe, with the last time we saw the series being an online multiplayer game for PC and Mobile in 2016.
The narrative of this entry revolves around a Character named Ryu, not to be confused with Capcom’s more well-known Ryu, who can turn into a dragon, again, not to be confused with the other Capcom character with dragon-themed martial arts moves. He teams up with a group of allies to do what all JRPG heroes do, stopping evil from destroying the world.
A part of their preservation program, PC game distributor GOG has fully updated Breath of Fire IV for modern PCs, releasing it DRM-free on their platform. This enhanced version takes advantage of optimization for modern PCs, complete with Windows 10 and 11 compatibility. It also includes both English and Japanese localization, improved graphics, windowed mode, V-sync, Anti-Aliasing, and a refined gamma correction for better visual output.
Breath of Fire IV isn’t the only game being added to the Preservation Program today, either, though I’m sure it is the one many will jump into first. Other games being revived include Ultima Underworld 1+2, Worms: Armageddon, and Realms of the Haunting, to name only a few. Several Ultima games are being added in this batch as well, making the entire classic RPG series now available through the platform. Hopefully, more franchises like Breath of Fire receive this treatment, as this makes a great option for traveling the halls of video game history.
