Atari has acquired five smaller titles from publisher Ubisoft that have been dormant for a number of years. These titles include indie RPG Child of Eden, Survival Horror game Cold Fear, quirky Platformer Grow Home, and its sequel Grow Up, as well as earthquake survival game I am Alive. Atari has stated they plan to “reintroduce iconic creations, bringing them to new platforms and renewed publishing frameworks,” and that all these games will be re-released under Atari’s publishing label “on new platforms.”
Deborah Papiernik, Ubisoft’s VP of Business, stated:
Millions of players have experienced these worlds over the years, and this will open the door for long-time players to revisit those memories while inviting new audiences to discover them for the first time. Atari has a rich gaming legacy and deep appreciation for these classic titles, we’re excited to see how they’ll evolve and connect with players in fresh, meaningful ways.
In terms of partnership, this is only the most recent one that Ubisoft has struck. Earlier this year, Ubisoft created a subsidiary company al;ong with Chinese megacorporation Tencent to help with some of the bigger franchises the company owns, such as Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six. Ubisoft has additionally partnered with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund to support Assassin’s Creed Mirage with additional content. These deals follow years of struggle for the company, putting a large amount of pressure on the company to succeed with Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which they released earlier this year, starting with widespread allegations of abuse by management within the company, leading to a mass exodus.
Atari has also returned to the game industry in a big way, releasing the Atari VCS back in 2021, the first console from the company since the Jaguar released in 1993. The company followed this up with an updated 2600+ based on their most popular console, in 2023, which allows for 2600 cartridges to play on it, as well as digital games similar to the Atari VCS. They have also moved back to publishing games such as Yar’s Rising, which was released last year, as well as Adventure of Samsara, released this year. Both were based on classic franchises from the company.
