Aspyr Media, the Embracer Group-owned studio, has been accused of using AI to replicate the voice of French actor Françoise Cadol without her permission, for use in their most recent titles, the Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered collection. Aspyr Media is perhaps best known for their remaster work, in particular on games like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

Cadol has voiced the character of Lara Croft, the main protagonist of the Tomb Raider series, in France for several decades. In addition to the games, she was also brought in to voice the character in the French dub of the Tomb Raider films, starring Angelina Jolie, which were released in 2001 and 2003, respectively. In an article via the French publication La Parisien, Cadol states that the remastered games used Artificial Intelligence tools to replicate her performances for several of these remastered titles, despite not having given any form of consent.

She stated that players had alerted her to the situation at large, having spotted discrepancies between her original performance and some new lines that were added in an update that was released on August 14, 2025. The patch notes published by Aspyr at the time of release detailed several localization and voice-over changes, including some voice-overs that were missing from the Steam build, with other adjustments designed to fix issues with some lines being too quiet.

Cadol has since filed a formal notice against Embracer Group, requesting that the compilation of remasters be removed from sale until such time as this issue can be addressed. In addition, her legal team is working to get a more concrete picture of how many titles have been sold thus far. Her Lawyer, Jonathan Elkaim, noted a “Robotic” sounding imitation. He Stated:

You immediately notice that there’s a very strong metallic impact, it’s very choppy, lacking in intonation, or on the contrary, poorly performed, but the timbre is reminiscent of Françoise’s

Elkaim specializes in intellectual property and artificial intelligence, also stating that it is a pretty obvious imitation. Elkaim accused Aspyr of misleading its consumers, while Cadol claimed Embracer was disrespecting players. Aspyr Media has not responded to the request for comment from La Parisien.
