God of War Laufey Announced During State of Play

Closing out the Sony State of Play on June 2 was Studio Santa Monica announced God of War Laufey. The biggest thing about this newest entry in the series, however, was that series protagonist Kratos will not take the lead this time around, with his deceased wife Faye taking the lead in a sort of sequel, Midquel, or interquel hybrid. The biggest thing to note, as it stands, is that the 20-minute deep dive showcasing the title begins right where the first game of the Norse saga does, and features Kratos and his young son Atreus burning the deceased Faye. This kicked off their journey all those years ago, and it appears this event will kick off her journey as well.

From there, the game uses the signature camera style of its predecessors to transition to another realm in which Faye awakens and screams out her husband’s name to no avail. God of War Laufey is set in The Everywhen. What is interesting about this realm, which is the afterlife of the gods, is that it isn’t exclusive to simply the Norse gods, allowing for the co-mingling of other cultural gods like those of the Egyptians. Since the next mainline God of War has been rumored to be set in Egypt, there is a possibility this game might offer some bridge between the previous series and the next.

What we can tell from the deep dive, though, is that unlike the previous spin-off, God of War: Sons of Sparda, we can expect this game to be more in line with other entries. There is an emphasis on cinematic storytelling, and the latter half of the trailer shows that Faye will participate in tight combat with a one-handed blade called Rue, as well as some of her mystical abilities, such as one that knocks an enemy away, leaving its spirit behind to be slaughtered.

God of War Laufey did not receive a release date during its showcase, only stating it is coming soon. Gaming Journalist Jason Schreier has stated, however, that the title isn’t years away.
