One thing that Square Enix has gotten exceptionally good at over the years is building hype for their upcoming games with good demos. With Final Fantasy Resonance, the first Final Fantasy in the HD-2D style of Octopath Traveler, releasing in October, it was announced today during Sony’s State of Play that a Demo for the game will be made available today.
Similar to previous Square Enix demos, this one will feature the entire first chapter of Final Fantasy Resonance, which can take players 3 to 5 hours to complete. Once you beat the demo, all progress made can be saved and transferred over to the full release of the game when it finally drops on October 22. The benefit of this is being able to skip the typically narrative-heavy introduction to the game now, putting you ahead at launch.
Final Fantasy Resonance is, for the most part, a throwback experience for fans of the series, with the game featuring turn-based combat and high-quality pixel art. The narrative itself is a repurposing of the 2015 mobile title Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, translating the first arc of the mobile game, entitled Lapis, for the story featured here. As such, the game features summonables known as Visions that take the form of characters seen throughout Final Fantasy’s history, such as Cloud and Terra.
The trailer itself ends on a very special reveal as well, as we see Final Fantasy VII villain Sepheroth appear for what looks like a challenging turn-based battle. If nothing else, it feels flashy and nostalgic in the best of ways. What this means for the overall plot, we will need to wait for the game’s release to learn. During this same State of Play, we also learned when our final confrontation with Sepheroth in Final Fantasy VII Revelation will begin as well.
Final Fantasy Resonance will release on October 22. It will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. You can download the demo now.
