Atomfall, the post-apocalyptic action game set amid the ruins of 1962 London, has proven successful as it reaches 1.5 million players. Developer Rebellion, best known for its Sniper Elite series as well as its Zombie Army spin-off series, has stated that this has been the most successful title for the studio in the compies 32 years in business.
Jason Kingsley, the CBE and CEO and co-founder of Rebellion, stated:
We are delighted that so many players are enjoying Atomfall. To have surpassed the 1 million players in such a short space of time speaks volumes for the creativity and dedication of the entire team here at Rebellion. Our size and stability mean that we can take risks to create something as different as Atomfall. Happily, that risk is paying off.
We are a British company, and the game is a true reflection of that. Not only is it set in the lush, beautiful countryside but Atomfall also draws inspiration from so many classic British books, films and TV series. We hope that players continue to enjoy exploring the world of Atomfall and are looking forward to future content for the game.
While Atomfall was released across PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Xbox One, it was also a day-one title with Xbox Game Pass, which served to boost these numbers and the exposure of the game. Rebellion has previously released other games, such as their most recent entries in the Sniper Elite series, as well, though even they haven’t seen the success the company is in the moment.
Currently, no official sales numbers have been released, with the studio choosing to focus on player numbers instead of sales, which is similar to Ubisoft’s approach to Assassins Creed Shadows. Atomfall, being from a smaller-budget studio, most likely needs lower numbers than many of these other games to be marked as a financial success overall.
Alongside this bigger number, several smaller stats for players have also been released. These include over 316,000 players choosing to kill the scientist at the beginning of the game and over 3.7 million kills being claimed through the use of the Cricket bat. A quintessentially British stat also states 300,000 cups of tea have been consumed.
Atomfall is one of the games I have been excited to play but, sadly, because about 7 RPGs have released at the same time released so I am slowly working through my new backlog with it sitting on my counter unopened for now.
