Capcom has announced that Devil May Cry 5, their 2019 entry in the long-running Devil May Cry franchise, has reached the impressive lifetime sales milestone of 10 million units. The developer pointed to the recent Devil May Cry Anime release on Netflix as a contributing factor in pushing the series past this milestone.
In a press statement released by Capcom, it was stated, “The title has garnered strong support from users due to its exceptional gameplay experience, leading to expanded sales as a catalog title since its release.” This is owing to the success of the title, now six years on from release.
Capcom went on to say that:
The animated series has garnered critical acclaim from around the world, and with more than 5.3 million views it ranked fourth during its first week globally in the “Shows | English” category, while also ranking in the top 10 for seven consecutive days in Japan. As a result of the game’s exhilarating action, and due to efforts to enhance brand awareness by leveraging the title beyond the scope of video games, including television adaptations, the title has now exceeded 10 million units in cumulative sales worldwide.
Devil May Cry has continued to maintain success for Capcom, having sold more than 33 million units as a franchise overall since its initial release in 2001. With these additional sales for the fifth entry in the series, however, the game has now crossed the threshold into the top 10 best-selling titles from Capcom of all time. This may lead some to wonder when they can expect a new entry in the series, which has seemed not to be a priority for the developer. It should be noted that there was a decade-long game between Devil May Cry 4 and Devil May Cry 5, so this is about on par with that.
Capcom, for their part, had a great Summer Games Fest, showcasing their new IP Pragmata during the Sony State of Play, with a hopefully real release window of 2026. In addition, they ended Summer Games Fest with the announcement of their 9th mainline entry in the Resident Evil Franchise, entitled Resident Evil: Requiem. The studio had previously ended the same event when they announced Monster Hunter: Wilds, showcasing the company’s current prestige in the gaming industry.
