The highly anticipated Guild Wars 3 has just been announced. While many fans are understandably excited, some wonder where the franchise is heading.
The Guild Wars franchise is beloved by MMO veterans. With over 12 million monthly active players, Guild Wars 2 has a healthy online community. Most recently, the announcement of the highly anticipated Guild Wars 3 left some players wondering: What will happen to the future of the series? Fret not, as developer ArenaNet released a comprehensive video on their official channel detailing their plans for the saga. Long story short, there will be plenty to play for everyone for years to come.
For the uninitiated, the original game’s development slowed down circa 2007 to focus all the studio’s resources on the sequel. Meanwhile, many feared the announcement of the third entry would cause a wrinkle in their much-liked Guild Wars 2. Understandably so. While Studio Director Colin Johanson acknowledged past mistakes, he confirmed that this time things will look extremely diverse.

The Future
The original Guild Wars is currently available as Guild Wars Reforged and playable on Steam Deck. Similarly, the second entry will still be supported even after 3 launches. Every one of these entries will continue to receive new content according to their latest video. This ambitious commitment to cater to every player is rarely seen and is an exciting feat for the developer. Also, they reiterated that each will play in unique ways. Feedback from passionate fans will always help shape their future, as detailed on their blog.
Guild Wars 3 is gearing up to release on Steam and, for the first time, PlayStation 5. Dubbed “a modern evolution of the genre,” this next-generation action-adventure MMORPG aims to change the game. Studio Director Colin Johanson and Guild Wars 2 Director Josh Davies will host a livestream on their official Twitch channel this Tuesday, June 9th, at 11AM PT to discuss the future of the franchise.
Guild Wars Reforged and Guild Wars 2 are currently available on Steam, and Guild Wars 3 is currently in development for Steam and PS5 with a 2027 release date.
