All of the improvements to your weapons in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers come from the Impetus Repository, otherwise known as the skill tree. Unlike Dark Souls, where you must obtain certain gems scattered throughout the world and give them to the expert blacksmith Andre, here the process cuts out the middleman. Once you choose one weapon from axes, longswords, spears, and dual swords, you will notice an ability called, for example, “Spear Mastery”. These abilities cannot be unlocked with your usual skill points gained from leveling up. They must be earned by picking up a unique item that is hard to find, because it wouldn’t be a soulslike otherwise.
To level up all of the weapons in a skill tree and make more damage, you must invest in these mastery areas. This is accomplished by scouring the world for items known as red feathers. Faint, Brilliant, Radiant, and Lustrous Red Feathers are specifically placed in well-hidden areas of the demon-ridden world of Wuchang. In order to do the most damage possible, it is encouraged to go off the beaten path and look for these Red Feathers. The game itself is generous at the beginning to improve your abilities, placing certain aggressive enemies inside of vases ready to surprise you. More challenging red-eyed enemies also drop red feathers and a skill point, but it must be said that they are more powerful and a real challenge to overcome, compared to the usual enemies found.
Lastly, red feathers can be sold by vendors after giving them key valuable treasures, but if you have explored the world thoroughly, by the time they sell them to you, they won’t be needed any longer. It is recommended to invest in Weapon Mastery, as reaching the coveted +10 in your weapon of choice is basically a must-have to successfully defeat some late-game bosses.
