Sony has announced today through a post to the SIE Blog that the Sony PlayStation 5 has surpassed 40 million units sold to gamers. This milestone was hit only around 6 months after Sony had announced they had previously hit the 30 million milestone, back in January 2023/
The blog post, written by Sony Interactive president and CEO Jim Ryan, goes on to recount the early launch window of Sony’s now current generation of hardware. Launching in 2020, the console was beset by issues including hardware shortages and a global pandemic brought about by the spread of the Coronavirus, which lead to a global shutdown.
The post states:
Despite the unprecedented challenges of COVID, our teams and our partners worked diligently to deliver PS5 on time. We continued to face headwinds with the pandemic, and it took months for supply chains to normalize so we could have the inventory to keep up with demand. For more months than I care to remember, we kept thanking our community for their patience while working through these issues.
It then goes on the remind consumers that the PlayStation 5 is now well stocked both online and in-store, allowing players who are ready to upgrade a vast array of options to choose from. This was before thanking their community for their continued support even through that period of time.
In addition, the post also points to a large selection of games that have helped drive their sales. These include exclusive and first-party titles such as the recently released Final Fantasy XVI, as well as third-party games such as cat simulator Stray.
While the PlayStation has experienced continued success, there are definitely more prospects on the horizon for them. The biggest bright spot is the upcoming Spider-Man 2, being developed by first-party studio Insomniac which is set to release on October 20th, 2023. The game is also set to get the second themed panel set for players to customize their console, with the first set being made for Final Fantasy XVI.
There have also been whispers of a mid-generation upgrade called the PlayStation 5 Pro, though we will not be sure of its existence till Sony chooses to confirm it. Considering how the previous featured one, and how games are already beginning to hit the limitations of the console hardware, this would not be a stretch to believe.
