Night Dive Studios‘ reboot of the classic Sci-Fi game System Shock, a title that served as a spiritual successor to the still popular Bioshock franchise, finally has a date for its console Release. The game was already released on PC last year and even though it was largely found to be a solid remake, there were polish issues with the title, many of which have been addressed since then.
This announcement was made via a trailer exclusively released through IGN, giving us a look at the game on console, as well as its May 2lst release date:
To those unfamiliar with the series, it blends space-based sci-fi with some Cyberpunk aesthetics to create an engaging FPS experience. The player takes control of an unnamed hacker character who is hired to hack an AI named SHODAN. As with most stories in this genre, this goes wrong, ending with the Hacker in a six-month coma. When they awaken they learn SHODAN has taken over the space station you were aboard and they must fight to survive and wrestle control of the ship back from the rogue AI.
One of my favorite elements of the Remake is just how effectively they managed to update the combat, shooting, and world design while still including elements that look at feel like the 1994 original. One of these elements surfaces in some of the hacking elements, which makes it feel like a dated sci-0fi while still feeling fresh.
Ken Levine, one of the founders of Irrational Games and creator of the BioShock series, would eventually direct the Sequel in 1999. Other franchises that have been credited as having been inspired by System Shock include the Deus Ex series, as well as the 2017 Prey game. Levine himself is also developing a new game that seems to have some elements in common, named Judas, which is set for the PlayStation 5 sometime in the future.
System Shock will be available for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X on May 21st, 2024. It is already available via Steam on the PC.
