Retailers such as GameStop, along with other third-party resellers, have begun raising the price of a used PlayStation 5 Pro console to as much as $1,400. This is a $500 markup over Sony’s suggested retail price. Rumors started circulating late last night that GameStop was expected to raise the price of the all-digital console, howeverever we did not receive confirmation of this until this morning, when the company updated its website with the altered prices.
Websites where third-party resellers can move product, such as Best Buy, Amazon, and Walmart, have also changed their prices in line with this. This price hike appears to be in response to an overwhelming demand for the console, which saw its retail price change from $750 to $900 earlier this year in response to several factors, including a superconductor chip shortage as well as the tariffs enacted by President Donald J. Trump.
Demand for the console was always expected to be at an all-time high, in part due to the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, which is set for November 19, 2026. Most likely, since 2K and Sony have formed a partnership around the release, we can expect the long-awaited title to take advantage of the added hardware in some capacity. Most likely, Sony is going to struggle to meet the demand for the console from players, something that is expected to cause a boost in sales in the pre-owned and refurbished market. Obviously, GameStop plans to capitalize on that.
Obviously, with that amount of money, you could probably buy a quality and comparable PC. The thing is, though, players currently in the market to upgrade because of Grand Theft Auto VI will not have access to the title on PC. This is a common practice for Rockstar, releasing their titles on PC around a year or so after their release on Console, meaning you only really have one choice.
When the title was announced for preorder, two versions were announced: one that was $79.99, lacking access to certain features and stores in-game, and a $99.99 version with access to everything. Since a majority of preorders on the digital game have been for the highest edition, it stands to reason most players will at least attempt to play the game where they have access to the most options for play, which currently stands as the PlayStation 5 Pro.
