Nintendo has stated they expect the Nintendo Switch 2 to sell 15 million units worldwide during its first nine months on the market. The company has shared these sales forecasts as part of their fiscal report for the year, which ends on March 31st, 2025. They additionally stated they expect software sales for the platform to total 45 million in sales over this same period of time.
The original Nintendo Switch sold around 18 million units worldwide during its first year of sales. The handheld was released initially on March 3, 2017, selling 2.74 million units by the end of that month, before going on to sell 15.05 million units over the next fiscal year. It is important to note that the Nintendo Switch 2, which is set to release on June 5th, is only seeing estimates within its first fiscal year on the market. This means if these numbers pan out, we could see the Nintendo Switch 2 fully outperform its predecessor over a full 12-month period.
Nintendo Switch, as it stands currently, is on track to become the best-selling Nintendo console of all time. In the 2025 fiscal year, an additional 10.8 million units were sold, driving total sales since its release to 152.12 million units. The only Nintendo platform to outperform that up until this point is the Nintendo DS, which, as it stands now, only sits around 2 million units lifetime sales above the Switch.
In Japan, the Nintendo Switch 2 proved to be so in demand that the company had to issue a statement that they would not be able to accommodate everyone looking for the system at launch. This is despite two lottery drawings that were held to attempt to give as many fans in the country the opportunity to pre-order it. Rumors have suggested that a large number of Nintendo’s consoles manufactured in Vietnam have been shipped to the US in an attempt to avoid tariffs, the Switch 2 pre-orders in the us having been delayed several weeks because of them.
