Somewhere in the middle of the Geoff Keighley-hosted Opening Night Live, a new trailer for the absurd action title Showa American Story was released. From Developer NEKCOM and Publisher 4Divinity, this over-the-top RPG is set in a post-apocalyptic alternative version of the United States of America, in which much of the country has been bought out by Japan, causing a blending of the two cultures. Oh, and there is also a zombie apocalypse going on.
Players take control of Choko, a woman with mysterious powers who is traveling across the states, fighting zombies, and meeting new people. In this trailer, we get a good sense of many of the people she will meet along the way. Some friendly, some not so much. We also got a good look at some of the excursions they will encounter along the way, including arcade cabinets like one that appears to rip off Space Harrier, except with a girl in a bunny suit taking center screen.
Key features for Showa American Story include:
- Distinctive Visual Style: Take a gander at a unique world that fuses retro American and Japanese pop culture aesthetics, resulting in one of the most original RPG settings in recent years.
- You Were Already Dead: Meet Chigusa Choko, the protagonist of SHOWA AMERICAN STORY who — for reasons unknown to her — comes back from the dead. What happened to her? What happened to the world? Discover answers to these questions alongside Choko in this journey of self-discovery.
- A Mountain from Dust: Travel across a “Japanified” version of America and visit iconic landmarks and reimagined American cities such as Neo Yokohama (formerly known as Los Angeles), San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Neo Tokyo #4 (formerly known as Austin). Your actions and dialogue choices will impact the world around you. You’ll meet fellow survivors and immerse yourself in their stories, and some will even become your trusty companions that tag along on the adventure.
- Vermin to Kill: Dispatch foes using a variety of melee weapons, ranged firearms, and other strange contraptions that each have their own strengths and weaknesses. Samurai swords, a drill-arm, THE ‘MERICAN FLAG, guns galore — Choko’s arsenal is immense. Which will be your favorite?
- Funny Games: Partake in dozens of unique mini-games and stat-boosting daily activities — from fully-playable arcade machines, hopscotch, dumbbell training, and loads more — that will evoke era-specific nostalgia. A rich selection of side-quests further flesh out the world’s characters and lore.
Show American Story was first revealed back in 2022, with a few trailers showcased since then. Unfortunately, what we still don’t have is a release date. It is planned for release on PlayStation 5 and PC.
