Closing out the Summer Game Fest, in its one more game moment, Capcom eerily set up the next installment and 9th mainline game in the Resident Evil series, entitled Resident Evil Requiem. In addition, it becomes clear in the trailer that we can expect to return to, of all places, Raccoon City.
The teaser trailer slowly builds up to what feels like a return to the focus on horror, as we follow an FBI agent as he walks through rows of cubicles to reveal the person who appears to be the main character, Grace Ashcroft. Fans of the series will know of, if not recognize, this character as the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft, who was one of the protagonists of the Resident Evil Outbreak series. Some time after these games, she was, presumably, murdered at the Remberandt Hotel, where her daughter is now being asked to investigate.
This is when the trailer takes a turn for the unexpected, shifting the setting to Raccoon City, which was bombed at the end of Resident Evil 2 and 3, with the series after that taking a more global focus. One setting we get to see is the familiar police station from 2, with many aspects of it completely destroyed. A wide shot of the city showcases a wide crater with a pool of water in the center, which gives us what we know about how that city met its end. While Grace is the only thing resembling a protagonist shown so far, insiders have suggested the series’ mainstay, Leon S. Kennedy, will be playable as well. Given the extreme success of Resident Evil 2 Remake, as well as the return to Raccoon City, it is very possible we will see a similar two-character setup to the narrative.
Resident Evil Requiem will release on February 27, 2026, for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. It will be playable in some capacity at Gamescom later this year.
