Helldivers 2, The Sony-published PVE title from developer Arrowhead, will be dropping on Xbox Series X/S next month, on August 26, 2025, a live stream from the developer has confirmed. Ironically, this will be the same date Gears of War: Reloaded release, which will see the classic Xbox title release on PlayStation for the first time. In a post via Xbox wire, Helldicver 2 Game Director Mikael Eriksson talked about what this release meant to the studio. He said:
We know gamers have been asking for this for some time and we are so excited to bring more Helldivers into our game. We have so much more in store for the future months and years – and the more players we have the more stories we can tell! The fight for Super Earth has only just begun.
Crossplay across all platforms has been confirmed for the title, meaning that PC, PlayStation, and Xbox will all get to join the fight for Super Earth side by side. Helldivers 2 released for PlayStation and PC in February of 2024, proving to be the live service hit that sony had been attempting find for years prior. It became the fastest selling PlayStation Studios game of all time, selling 12 million copies in 12 weeks, despite not being as big budget as other games under the banner such as Spider-Man 2.
The title did reach a rough patch over the PC release when Sony had attempted to force PlayStation accounts for PC users, something that saw the title review-bombed with many pointing out that regions in which the game was sold not having access to PlayStation accounts. This resulted with Sony forgoing the requirement for PC players but Sony attempting to be be more forthcoming about the requirement on future releases. This was ultimately changed to an incentivised, rather than required, option. Steam numbers, which are made public, has seen a steady playerbase on the game since then.
Sony has been protective of their Sony Studio titles, choosing often to forgo the Xbox marketplace, though continuing to push more heavily into releasing on PC. MLB The Show has been a rare acception to this going multiplatform spurred on by the MLB’s designer to grow the games audience beyond one platform, similar to other sports games like Madden. Lego Horizon Adventures, a lego based spin-off of Guerilla games popular open world title, released on PlayStation 5, Nintendo switch, and PC, additionally forgoing the Xbox platform despite LEGO games historically performing well on the system.
In the case of a live service title like Helldivers 2, having a wide audience is important, so this feels like a smart strategic strategy, given how much the company has struggled pentrating that market, only recently having cancelled multiple live-service games following the very public failure of Concord. Sony’s upcoming live service game Fairgames has also hit a rough patch with questions of its quality.
