Dragon Quest VII Set To Reportedly Recieve A Remake From Square Enix

Square Enix, publisher of the Dragon Quest series of RPGs, is suggested to relaunch more classic Dragon Quest titles than those that are already known, starting with Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. This news is according to the website MP1st, which received leaked documents from the company that showcased a number of unannounced projects in development, including the remake of the seventh mainline title.

What is interesting about this is that while other games have been specifically marked as being HD Remakes, VII is not listed as such. This could suggest that the title might be more than the usual touches these games have added to them to qualify at Square Enix for the category. Of course, Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past previously received a port to the 3DS in 2016, seeing the game heavily updated over its original version, including replacing the sprites and world with a fully 3D one, which might suggest that the remake could be a port of that version, which was itself considered the HD remake.

This leaked document suggests that this version of the game will be available sometime between early 2026 and 2027, fitting into Square Enix’s next fiscal year and financial forecast. With the success last year of the Dragon Quest III remake, which became the most played Square Enix title on Steam shortly after launch, it is hard to imagine that Square Enix wouldn’t want to commit in some way to porting additional games in the series to modern hardware. The studio’s other big RPG, Final Fantasy, save for the Lightning Trilogy, which, for some reason, continues to get ignored, has become entirely playable on PlayStation 5 and Xbox through several remasters and remakes, while Dragon Quest remains with a less concise way to play them all.

Square Enix has been rectifying this, with Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake set to launch on October 30, 2025, for Consoles and PC. Developed in conjunction with Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, these two titles will complete the Erdrick trilogy, which is featured across the first three games in the series, with Yuji Horii having stated that this time he wants players to play them in chronological order of III, I, II, rather than how they had released at the time. In addition, Horii recently confirmed that Dragon Quest XII: The Flame of Fate has not been cancelled as previous rumors have suggested. The game was announced back in 2021 before going quiet. While he said that he could not say much about the development of the game, he confirmed it to be making steady progress. While hopefully that is the case, similar things were said by Phil Spencer about the Perfect Dark Reboot shortly before it was cancelled, so now it’s hard to be confident even in direct statements. and reassurances.
