Concept art for the upcoming Fable reboot, being developed primarily by Forza Horizon developer Playground Games, has been shared online, suggesting a much more open-world experience than previous entries in the series. These images, originally highlighted by MP1st, originate from an unknown artist who was involved in the project at the British-based developer.

More than two dozen images were shared, showcasing a moody and dark fantasy setting, from forlorn towns to sweeping fields for the player to explore. Several of these images alsoi mode reference to “Bloodstone,” which was a port town in Fable II, implying we could see returning locations, as well as some continuity between the reboot and the original trilogy.

The images leaked seem to point to a dark fantasy setting, but of course, we have not been given a deep look at the RPG reboot as of yet. The original trilogy, developed by Lionhead Studios, had a very dark underbelly that was often masked by the game’s dry humour that played into most aspects of exploration.

While these images only give us a glimpse of how big the world might be, being developed on the same engine as Forza Horizon suggests an engine capable of building a world for players to traverse. This is in contrast to the earlier titles, which were big but featured smaller areas that interconnected with each other, though the last of these titles, Fable III, was released on Xbox 360, and there have been significant leaps in technology since then.

Thankfully, we do not have to wait very long before getting our first big glimpse at the title. Microsoft has announced that it will be holding its annual Xbox Developer Direct Event this week on January 22, at 1 p.m. ET. While we do not know everything that will be showcased there, it has been confirmed that Playground Games will be there to showcase the upcoming Fable, as well as Forza Horizon 6, which will be set this time in Japan. Both of these titles are currently slated for 2026.
