Developer IO Interactive has announced that the Nintendo Switch 2 version of their upcoming James Bond action game, 007 First Light, has been delayed. In a statement released via social media today, the studio reconfirmed that the release date of May 27 (which was previously held by Grand Theft Auto 6) will remain the date PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC will see the game release, but that the Nintendo Switch 2 can now expect it “later this summer.”
Originally announced to release on March 27, 007 First Light was hit with a delay for all platforms for additional polish, and the option became more viable when Grand Theft Auto 6 was delayed from that date to November. At the time, the plan was restated to see the title receive a simultaneous release across all platforms.
There has been no indication at present as to why exactly the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the title has been delayed. While the Nintendo Switch commonly had these issues, the Switch 2 has corrected course slightly, with February seeing Resident Evil Requiem releasing its Switch 2 version along with other versions of the game. The statement itself even goes so far as to avoid the term delay, saying:
We’re excited to see players discovering James Bond’s reimagined origin story, and we are looking forward to bringing you the best game experience possible across all platforms.
Of course, not all issues of release have been resolved, with titles like the promised Borderlands 4 port still nowhere to be seen, despite also having a planned simultaneous release. There is a possibility that, to meet the expected release date, the Switch 2 version has been sidelined to complete the other versions. Should the PlayStation and Xbox versions see yet another delay that could once again put the title in competition with GTA VI, a battle no developer could hope to win.
007 First Light is an original story set around the MI6 super spy with the titular code number, James Bond. It will feature a younger and more inexperienced Bond, portrayed by Dexter: Original Sin star Patrick Gibson, as he gets drafted into the world of espionage and high-stakes political intrigue. The game will also feature performances from Gemma Chan, Lenny James, and Lenny Kravitz as the antagonist of the story.
