Fans eager to explore the next entry in the long-running tactical RPG series can look forward to more details. Today, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave got an extended look during a Nintendo Direct. During the Direct, we got a deeper look at the upcoming story. It will feature four protagonists and several gameplay changes. These changes take advantage of the tournament that the experience revolves around to make the most of your time.

Four Characters, Cai, Theodora, Dietrich, and Leda will anchor this story, each entering the Heroes Game, a Colosseum tournament in which the victor receives one wish. The player will choose which character to start as, and each character progresses on its own. The game provides an easy way to swap between the four stories, so each narrative can progress simultaneously.

From there, the combat remains relatively unchanged. Players fight on a grid-based system with weapons that have both pros and cons. Choosing the right movement and attack is vital, with positioning against the enemy offering some buffs. The four characters will now have powerful Blaze Art attacks they can unleash, offering combat-shifting advantages. The arguably biggest change, though, is the ability to rewind combat, undoing unit defeats or poor move choices to fully change the tide of battle.

We also got a deeper look at free time, which allows free exploration between bouts in the arena. One such thing is getting training once a week that improves skills but also makes it so the character can wield more powerful weapons. On days when matches occurs the player can travel to the arena and watch so that they are aware of whats to come. There is a massive world map to explore with the character. Character-specific options while exploring include things like Theodora recruiting battalion members or Cai befriending animals.

During the ending, Nintendo Direct revealed a single, major twist. This reframes what we know about Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave. Jumping forward 5 years, the world is on the brink of ruin. This is when progenitor God Sothis, a returning character from Fire Emblem: Three Houses, summons a single soul. This is apparently the True Protagonist of the game, and one much more in line with previous heroes from the series. This character is controlling and playing the past stories, changing the fates of heroes, all to build their army for the coming battle.

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is set to release on September 17, 2026, and will be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2.
