The developer behind Layers of Fear and Silent Hill 2 Remake has announced a new type of horror game set to release next year. Originally teased earlier this year and believed to be their previously known Project M, Onyx: The Dark Grip is coming exclusively to the Nintendo Switch 2, having recieved a reveal trailer during the Nintendo Direct event held today. We originally learned of the game from a trademark filed earlier this year.
Onyx: The Dark Grip appears to play into some of the special features of the Nintendo Switch, in particular the system’s touchscreen. As such, the trailer made clear that the game will only be playable in handheld mode. This isn’t the first time a title on the platform has had such restrictions, as Nintendo Switch Sports similarly had such a restriction. That said, it is rare for a single-player-focused narrative game to feature the criteria.
The game revolves around Holden, who begins hearing mysterious voices that eventually drive him towards a snow-covered town with monsters that he might fight to survive. The touch screen comes into play in that players also control a mysterious entity that is watching over Holden, tapping the screen to move obstacles or protect him from life-threatening dangers. Narratively, Holden doesn’t know about this entity, making the seemingly random things happening around him something that drives him to the brink of his sanity.
Bloober Team currently has a lot of games in the pipeline, and not just Onyx: The Dark Grip. The team was developing a remake of the original Silent Hill following their success with their remake of the second title. The team is also developing the single-player horror game Layer of Fear 3, as well as the multiplayer-centered horror game Saw: Genesis, to name a few. Adding this to the mix means they definitely have their hands full.
