Panache Digital Games, a studio founded by Assassin’s Creed creator Patrice Désilets, announced its next game, 1666: Amsterdam, earlier this summer during the Summer Games Fest. At the time, we also recieved a prologue trailer along with an announcement that the game would enter early access later this year. Today, the studio has finally given us a date that we can expect the title to enter early access on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, later this month on August 25.
This news was announced alongside a new trailer for the game focusing on the day and night cycle featured in the game. 1666: Amsterdam has placed a strong emphasis on this mechanic throughout marketing. In the game, day and night are played differently, with the Main character, witch Noa Brooklyn, blending into the open world and investigating the identities of demonlike entities known as The Originals. At night, The Originals can be uncovered fully, with Noa using her powers to defeat them.
1666: Amsterdam features two playable protagonists, a feature that has also recieved a highlight trailer. Noa is accompanied by her black cat, Aaron, with each having functionality that plays into unraveling the mysteries plaguing Amsterdam. The title will also feature three connected timelines: 1333, 1666, and 1999 that the narrative will take place, with some time travel playing a signifigant role.
While the prologue demo offered an interesting look at the world the game will be set in, it recieved criticism for not offering a complete look at what was promised in the reveal trailer. Despite the game being billed as an open-world title, the demo played more like Life is Strange in self-contained set pieces. Despite this, I found it did offer enough to get me interested in the larger game, and now we have a date for when we get to start experiencing that. 1666: Amsterdam will cost $29.99 USD.
