Footage has been released online, reportedly showcasing a cancelled Assassin’s Creed title set in China, allegedly known as Assassin’s Creed Destiny. This is not to be confused with the currently in-development mobile title Assassin’s Creed Jade, which also uses the setting of China, or Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China, a side-scrolling spin-off of the franchise released in 2015. This news comes via MP1st, which stated the video originated from a developer’s portfolio, showcasing a prototype build of the game.
According to them, Assassin’s Creed Destiny was meant to be a mainline title in the series, rather than a spin-off title like Jade. That said, it seems the two games have a lot in common, starting with the fact that they share a developer in TiMi Studio Group, a Tencent subsidiary. Destiny would have also been set in the Qin Dynasty, similar to Jade, though at a later date of 206 BCE, with Jade set in 215 BCE. Both games also appear to include a female protagonist, though it is unclear if this version might have allowed players to choose their character’s gender, as Jade does.
The footage for the title, again all in the prototype stage, appears to show a female protagonist trying to reach some kind of mysterious artifact. The catch: the location of said artifact is a sacred temple currently under siege by the historical figure Xiang Yu, who is featured in a boss fight later on in the footage. Other things showcased during the video include stealth kills, combat, and leaps of faith. At one point, the lead character even wields an umbrella as a weapon, similar to the Wagasa in a Dynasty Warriors title.
While we haven’t seen much of Assassin’s Creed Jade recently, the title has been in development since 2020, and Ubisoft maintains that it is still in active development. Earlier this year, we got an update from franchise boss Jean Guesdon, in which he stated:
While we recently chose to pivot away from an early project, the lessons from that work are already helping shape our approach going forward. What matters most to us is giving each project the time it deserves and releasing them when they are ready.
Jean Guesdon, along with two other series veterans, was appointed back in February to take over the reins of the series at the newly created Ubisoft subsidiary, Vantage Studios. In addition to Jade, Codename Hexe, the next mainline entry is also in development. It will be set in Germany during the height of the European Witch Trials, which occurred during the 16th century.
