Vantage Studios, a subsidiary of Ubisoft that Chinese conglomerate Tencent partially funded, has announced that Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced, the latest installment in the long-running series, has hit 2 million copies sold in its first day of sales. In addition to this, it was announced that the title held the top spot at #1 on Twitch that day, as well as amassing a concurrent Steam player count of 99,451, the highest in Ubisoft’s history.
Originally released in 2013, Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag has remained one of the most popular titles in the franchise overall. Set during the golden age of piracy, players take on the role of Edward Kenway, the father of the false protagonist/villain of the previous game title in the series, Assassin’s Creed III. The title also built heavily on what was a new feature of the previous game, the sailing and naval combat aspects, with Edwards’ adventure through the Caribbean taking place largly on the water, with large-scale ship battles, as well as sword fights on deck.
Martin Schelling, who is the head of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, stated:
Black Flag has always held a special place in the heart of the community, and ours. Bringing it back with Resynced was a promise to that passion for Edward’s adventures, and to the unique sense of freedom players experienced back then. Seeing 2 million players set sail on day one, along with the great reviews from critics, is the greatest reward we could have hoped for.
Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynched has also been reviewed fairly well, currently sitting on 85% on Open Critic and 84% on Metacritic. In our review for the title, which I gave an 8.5/10, I stated, “Everything added elevates the experience, while everything left in feels purposeful. Returning to the Caribbean has never felt better, and Ubisoft has not felt this in control in a long time.”
It is available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC through the Ubisoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store. It is also available through the Ubisoft+ subscription service.
