Developer Game Science has released a 15-minute gameplay segment for their upcoming game, Black Myth: Zhong Kui, the sequel to their 2024 game Black Myth: Wukong. This trailer offers players a much closer look at the new protagonist, combat, and world players will get to experience when the game finally releases.
The trailer starts with several minutes of cutscenes, in which we meet our protagonist, though it is unclear at this point if the player will take the role of Zhong Kui or play as somebody else. Zhong Kui is a Taoist deity, often depicted as large, fierce, and disheveled, though he is considered a benevolent guardian. Obviously, there is a disconnect between the protagonist we play and the legend of the character in question.
The trailer switches to combat around the 2:44 mark, with the protagonist using a more traditional sword as compared to the first game’s extendable staff. The lead contends with a fair number of enemies bearing down on them, with a few of the game’s HUDs being showcased here. We see slashing mechanics the player can throw at enemies, as well as a pretty solid counter that helps him throw enemies off balance and control the field of combat. Even more interestingly, it seems enemies will hit or bounce off of each other when they fight you in groups.
This is simply the beginning of the action, as we see several humanoid enemies fought before other enemies. This is before the forest the action is set in, lighting on fire, forcing the player to flee through a standard traversal pathway. For players who enjoyed what the first Blackj Myth title offered, this next portion is for you, as we get to a boss-type fight. Based on their size and how aggressively they control the area, we can expect this to be a challenging moment for the player. It does appear the player will be able to summon allies to help fight, though, a returning feature from the original.
The trailer concludes with a series of looks at what players can expect throughout the rest of the game. This includes fast-paced combat and action, multiple Chinese-inspired landscapes to explore, and a few new elements along the way. It’s a pretty comprehensive first look at the gameplay that should excite fans of the first game.
Black Myth: Zhong Kui, as of yet, does not have a release window, nor do we know what consoles it will release on. Black Myth: Wukong released initially on PC and PlayStation 5, however, based on the title’s sales, Game Science should have very little limit on what they want.
