The developer behind upcoming titles Final Fantasy VII Revelation and Kingdom Hearts IV, Square Enix, has addressed recent rumors that the company plans to go private. This comes from a recent report by Japanese business magazine Sentaku, which claimed that Square Enix was looking to privatize their buisness, news that led to a 12% increase in the company’s stock on the New York Stock Exchange. However, the company has stated that this is not the case.
In a statement released by Square Enix, the company stated:
The September issue of the monthly magazine Sentaku carried a report regarding the possibility of Square Enix Holdings Co., LTD. (the ‘Company’) going private. However, this information was not announced by the Company. No consideration is currently being given within the Company to taking the Company private.
This news comes amid some other news of consolidation across the industry. Mainly, EA has finalized an acquisition of the company by the Saudi Arabian Investment Group, with the company being taken private as well. It will probably be some time before we see the ramifications of this acquisition, with games like the next installment in the Mass Effect series now facing an uncertain future. Even without going private, rumors like these can lead to rampant speculation, which appears to be something Square Enix is aware of and looking to avoid.
Right now, Square Enix is in a good position going into 2027. Final Fantasy VII Revelation is set to release in the spring of next year. Serving as the conclusion to the Remake trilogy, it will tell the final act of the story, with players having full freedom to explore the world and the full party to do so with. Kingdom Hearts IV, the long-awaited next entry in the Final Fantasy and Disney mashup, also resurfaced this year, promising a 2027 release as well. We finally saw our first Disney world featured in the game, based on Pixar’s Coco.
I should also note that Final Fantasy XVI was first released back in 2023. Given that both of those games are set to release next year, it wouldn’t be surprising to get a look at what’s next for the mainline series in the next year or so.
