After 4 years of absence since its announcement trailer, players were finally given a new look at Kingdom Hearts IV during the June Nintendo Direct. While unfortunately this news did not come with an official release date, we did learn that the title will be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 on the day and date of its release, continuing the strong push by Square Enix to be more multiplatform oriented.
The trailer returns us to the very modern city (with some similarities to Tokyo) we saw in the announcement trailer, giving us a continued look at Sora fighting a giant Heartless that is wreaking havoc throughout this city. This fight features very dynamic moments, such as Sora being thrown through a window of a skyscraper, as well as walls being destroyed as the heartless smashes his hands through. While Donald and Goofy do make an appearance in this trailer, there is a distinct lack of Disney overall.
We also got a look at a few characters coming to Kingdom Hearts IV, with the trailer opening with a character cloaked in a black robe with their face hidden, the signature look of members of Organization XIII. That group was supposedly destroyed in the previous entry, so this could be a new group that bears some similarities, or some version of the group that survived. Beyond this, we get a few flashes of other new characters that have some Final Fantasy appearances, but are not from the series itself.
Prior to this trailer being showcased, we also got confirmation that every previous entry of Kingdom Hearts will be getting a Nintendo Switch 2 port that will be native on the system. This is in contrast to the Nintendo Switch versions, all of which were cloud ports requiring access to the cloud to play.
It was stated during the announcement that if you had the cloud versions of the game on Nintendo Switch, all save data would be transferable to these new versions on Nintendo Switch 2. The games themselves are Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+ II.5 Remix, Kingdom Hearts HD II.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts III + Re.Mind.
The games will be available separately or through the Kingdom Hearts [1-III] Collection on October 8th, 12026.
