Fumito Ueda, the developer behind classic titles like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and most recently 2016’s The Last Guardian, showcased a new trailer for his upcoming game being developed by genDESIGN. Previously announced during the Video Game Awards in 2024 as Project Robot, the game now has the official title of gen Atlas. Similar to his previous games, the title appears to rely heavily on visual narrative, but a lot is going on.
The game takes place on an open-world planet, vast but silent. Players take the role of a robot who must explore this world that is filled with forgotten technology and massive, ancient robots. One of the major gameplay mechanics will allow the robot to pilot giant heads, placing them on mechs so that they can be controlled to solve puzzles or battle the hostile enemies the player may encounter.
The trailer itself, despite giving us a lot to work with in terms of visuals, still leaves a lot of questions. What we do see is that the protagonist will have a blaster-like gun that they will use to fight enemies. The setting itself is visually striking across every scene, and with no hub, some portions might very well be gameplay, but also could be cutscenes. For instance, we see at one point a robot lift a large metallic structure for the protagonist. This is one of the many functions of the robots after connecting their head, so this could be a fully playable scene, despite how dynamic it looks.
Unfortunately, gen ATLAS did not receive a release date during the Summer Games Fest Showcase. It will be available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. It is being developed using Unreal Engine 5 and is available to wishlist.
