Summer Games Fest kicked off by looking at a remake that a lot of Players have been waiting for. Resident Evil: Veronica is the next in an effort by Capcom to modernize their classic Resident Evil titles for both new and old players. The original was released on Dreamcast in 2000, with the new game dropping the word “code” from Resident Evil: Code Veronica, and is considered by many as the true successor to Resident Evil 2, with Capcom leadership wanting numbered games on PlayStation and other console titles to get subtitles.
While we do get somewhat of a look at the game, the teaser trailer actually plays its identity close to the vest. The first look plays out in first person, following Clair (though this is revealed in a name drop later) as she arrives in a Paris apartment to search for her brother. An older woman lets her in and serves as the focus for much of the trailer. While it is never explicitly stated, most likely the game will feature both first and third-person perspectives. This was added in an update to Resident Evil Village; however, Resident Evil Requiem was built around this.
It is around the mid point the older woman leaves, and a knock comes on the door to the apartment. Upon opening the door, Clair is grabbed from behind, and we switch perspectives to a third-person perspective. In the original game, Clair again is searching for her brother Chris Redfield; however, she does this by raiding an Umbrella Headquarters in Paris. We have seen the remakes alter and add more narrative, so this is possibly a build-up to that moment, or we could see the beginning of a complete alteration. We will have to wait and see.
After this, we get a compilation of sequences, such as a few zombies, as well as an aerial view of Rockfort Island, where a large portion of the game is set. What we don’t get to see is Steve Burnside, her eventual ally. Obviously, there is still a lot to learn about this remake that we will learn over the coming months.
Resident Evil: Veronica is set to release in 2027, and will release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
