Regardless of the rumour that Marathon has a dwindling player count, Bungie has confirmed their plans that the game has story content mapped out for at least’The next few years’. Creative Director Julia Nardin teased upcoming plans for the latest extraction shoot from the developer of Halo and Destiny during an interview with the publication GamesRadar. Despite the title only being around 2 months old, she stated the team is at least confident enough to have a loose idea of what direction the narrative will progress in the years to come.
Nardin Stated during this interview:
We know where we want to take the story over the next few years, but I don’t want to say it’s completely ‘locked in’ because it’s important to us that our players be able to help shape it.
They’ll always be able to uncover the mysteries of Tau Ceti’s past while experiencing its present. We want every season to be a new entry point, and for new players to be able to understand what’s going on regardless of how long we’ve all been running
Marathon launched after a somewhat turbulent development on March 5, allowing players on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC to head to Tau Ceti IV to gather resources, complete tasks, and kill other players that got in their way. The title already had some risk upon launch, with a similar title, Arc Raiders, having finally premiered late last year with a lot of hype behind it. The two titles had previously had overlap in the release of their betas, with Arc having come away as the fan favorite in comparison. Of course, issues like plagiarism also followed the title to its March release.
Despite this, Marathon premiered to mostly positive reviews. Bungie has a long history of growing their multiplayers in tandem with its community, as a long-term strategy that has served the company well with its previous live service title, Destiny. One complaint from that era from fans has been jumping into the middle of a years-long arc, something Nardin said the team hopes to avoid here. She stated that even if you have yet to tackle your first run, Bungie wants players to be able to “jump into Marathon at any time.”
