Warhorse Studios Confirms New Kingdom Come Game and Lord of the Rings RPG in Development

Warhorse Studios, the developer behind the Kingdom Come: Deliverance series of medieval RPG games, has confirmed that they have two new projects in development. The first of these was rumored since late last year, with Warhorse being rumored to be attached since March, and is an RPG game based on the Lord of the Rings title. The second of these new projects is a follow-up to the Kingdom Come series, the last of which received several game of the year nominations.

In a post via social media, the studio, which is owned by the Embracer Group, confirmed the rumors that they were indeed behind a new Lord of the Rings RPG, acknowledging that the rumors were true. While not much is known about this title as yet, it has been described as “an open-world Middle-earth RPG.” There have been suggestions that the game will not be set in the age represented in the books by J.R.R. Tolkien, but it will follow a similar formula to the Kingdom Come: Deliverance games.

When these rumors started, Warhorse was an easy fit for the project to get excited about. Kingdom Come: Deliverance is an open-world RPG set in Bohemia (modern-day Czech Republic). While the franchise prided itself on the realism of its combat and world, a fantasy setting like the Middle-earth world would be perfect for an adventure where you truly feel part of the world around you.

While this was all expected (though maybe not as soon), while speaking on the project, the studio confirmed that a new Kingdom Come game was also in development. It is important to note, however, that while this has been assumed to be Kingdom Come: Deliverance 3, the game was not announced with that subtitle. Without going into full spoiler territory, the previous game wrapped up many plot threads but did leave a few open. Best boy Henry of Skalitz did get what felt like a proper ending, so we could see this new game go in a different direction.

This news comes amid Embracer Group announcing plans to spin off Fellowship Entertainment, a new business unit meant to fully double down on the publisher’s largest franchises. These franchises include Saints Row, Legacy of Kain, Deus Ex, Red Faction, The Mask, Thief, and TimeSplitters, to name a few. We almost received a new Deus Ex at one point, though it was cancelled early into the process. A new Saints Row title was released back in 2022 to poor sales and reception, resulting in developer Volition being closed after a 30-year run in the industry.
