Activision has officially announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, a continuation of the subseries we last saw in 2023, stating it will release on October 23, 2026, from developer Infinity Ward. While the title is being released on expected platforms, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC, the game will also be released on Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time. This is part of a 10-year deal between Nintendo and Microsoft as the latter worked to finalize their $70 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
This will also mark the first time since Call of Duty: Ghosts to not release on the previous-gen hardware of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as it appears Activision will finally leave those consoles behind.
In an interesting twist to the formula, Modern Warfare 4 will take place during a modern Korean War, with the player taking the role of a South Korean soldier, rather than the typical American or British soldier you typically take agency over. This said, the series staple Captain Price will make an appearance as an ally. An official blurb for the game states:
War erupts on the Korean Peninsula as North Korea launches a full-scale invasion that threatens to destabilize the world in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. A young squad of South Korean soldiers fight to survive on the collapsing front lines, while half a world away a vengeful Captain Price wages a personal war from the shadows as he stays one step ahead of those hunting him. As Price’s off-book mission collides with the forces behind the invasion, the war spreads beyond anyone’s control.
Activision went on to state that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 was “built natively for current-generation consoles and PC,” which makes for “greater scale, density, responsiveness, and consistency across every mode.” For PC players, Activision promises that this title has been built with “with a renewed focus,” and will feature “PC-specific performance optimizations,” with multiple options for upscaling and frame generation, along with extended graphic options.
Call of Duty: Warzone is also slowly being brought to an end on the previous-gen as well. Starting on June 4, PS4 and Xbox One players will find they are no longer able to download the game. On June 25, the in-game store will no longer be available. On October 23, starting with season 1 of Modern Warfare 4, Warzone will no longer be playable.
