Mina the Hollower is the latest game to infuse several longstanding franchises to great effect, but some might find it harder than others. Here is how to make it easier.
Mina the Hollower evokes classics like The Legend of Zelda, Castlevania, and Bloodborne. For veteran players, that last one will invoke painful memories of struggle to achieve victory. And it’s true. Mina the Hollower is not an easy game. Thankfully, in this friendlier day and age in gaming, for the most part, game developers have focused on giving plenty of options for a variety of players. Mina is not the exception. Available from the very start but not exactly clear, accessing the difficulty options takes a bit of curiosity.
After its stellar introductory cutscene that harkens back to games of yore, Mina the Hollower’s start menu makes way for profiles before starting the game. Once the profile has been created, there are no straightforward difficulty options to choose before embarking on the adventure. To unlock the accessibility features, you must first start the game, watch its prologue, and once you control Mina, go back to the menu.

From here, a shiny new button called Modifiers will appear. That’s the ticket. It is impressive how many variables exist. With 239 modifiers, to be precise, there are several that make it an important step forward in accessibility. Visually, damage numbers for both Mina and enemies are togglable. Mina herself can look 1.5 times bigger on screen to recognize her better. There are other more difficulty-based mods. Infinite health, reduced enemy damage, and even making the world speed slower, consider every type of player proficiency.
A few nifty details, like adding your favorites to a list or combo modifiers that toggle numerous of them at a time, make for an intuitive experience. Assist and Explore modes lower or negate damage. Veteran mode turns up the heat for the thrillseekers. The only downside to turning on difficulty-based modifiers is that the in-game achievements will not unlock. Bragging rights are all well and good, but having a pleasant experience at the end of the day is crucial.
Given a 10 out of 10 by Pixelbyte, it is refreshing to see that it accounts for everyone. Mina the Hollower is out now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam, GOG, and Humble.
