In the shadow of Grand Theft Auto 6, Xbox has decided to postpone Fable to 2027.
Xbox has announced that the upcoming Fable Reboot, being developed by Forza Horizon developer Playground Games, has been delayed to 2027, Xbox has announced. The title was due out later this year, though an official release date had never been finalized, with a new release window of February 2027 now the timeframe they plan for players to FINALLY return to Albion.
Xbox took to social media today to announce this news. In their official post, they stated:
This is year is packed with incredible games for Xbox players to enjoy, from Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E-Day and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 to Control Resonant, Star Wars: Galactic Racer and Grand Theft Auto VI.
In order to plan our game launches through the holidays, in a way that works best for players, we’re moving Fable to February 2027 so it can have the dedicated moment it deserves. We’re excited to be giving players a major new look at Fable, as well as our broader lineup, at Xbox Games Showcase on June 7.
This news comes shortly after some speculation last month that the game had been delayed internally, something that the official social media account of Fable made a point to deny. Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb had stated last month that there were some concerns internally about the title potentially competing head-to-head with Juggernaut Grand Theft Auto VI, with it seeming more likely it will hit its November 19 release date. There have been some rumors about GTA VI potentially experiencing a delay as well. The CEO of Take-Two made a point recently to hammer home that the release date is when players can expect to play the gaming giant finally.
Grubb stated at that time:
I’ll say that I’ve heard that Fable has been pushed internally. That doesn’t mean that it’s coming out next year. Apparently, they’re still trying to get it out this year, but they are worried about the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6. And so if it’s getting delayed beyond the release of Grand Theft Auto 6, that could push it into December, which might make it a prime candidate to get delayed into 2027. So while Xbox will have a lot of games coming out this year, that’s one that there’s still a big question mark around.
As Microsoft pointed out, this year is still a stacked one for them. Only recently, Playground Games released Forza Horizon 6 to a positive reception. Xbox will also hold its annual Xbox Games Showcase, where a showcase of Gears of War: E-Day will follow, with that title set to release this year as well. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 was also recently announced, set to be released this October.
Fable was announced in 202 with a teaser trailer. It would not receive an in-game trailer until 2024, with a first look earlier this year. Originally, the plan was to release the title in 2025 before it was delayed to 2026 and now to February 2027. The game will release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.
