While we knew that Firesprite, who weas aquired by Sony back in 2021, was working on a narrative-driven horror title that was rumored to tie into an existing IP, it was announced during Sony’s State of Play that the studio was in fact developing Until Dawn 2. The original Until Dawn was released back in 2015, with a remaster of the title releasing in 2024, and a film based on the IP releasing in 2025. The original title was developed by Supermassive Games, which recently released Directive 8020, part of their Dark Pictures Anthology series.
Until Dawn appears to be trading in the snowshoes of the first game for flip-flops, with the setting now set on a tropical island. On it, another group of unsuspecting and slightly horny young adults finds their lives in peril as a mysterious killer stalks them, and, depending on the choices you make, might actually end up killing them, or lead to their death through a series of bad choices.
What we do know about the narrative is that the game follows a group of ghost hunters who fake most of their footage, traveling to the island to investigate a facility that was shut down long prior but is rumored to have paranormal activity. Midway through the trailer, we are then introduced to the killer of the game when he brutally murders one of the characters, then chases two others. Based on a choice made in the trailer while leaping off a cliff to the ocean below, another character meets their end by crashing into a rock.
It is unclear just what to make of our tormentor from the trailer, as they appear to be human but with a dated outfit. They could be part of the paranormal element they came to find, as is common in stories like this, or they could just be taking advantage of this. The original Until Dawn featured a major shift in the narrative midway through, so perhaps Firesprite might lean into that, but we don’t know at present.
What we do know is that Until Dawn 2 is slated for release in 2027, most likely as a PlayStation 5 exclusive.
