Deer & Boy looks from the surface like a gentle walk through nature with its titular characters but reveals a deep, powerful tale that will stick with players long after the credits roll.

When I was younger, I always lamented that the dogs I owned over the years did not pay much attention to me. They would bark when they needed food or scratch the door when it was time to go out, but not much else. I never knew what that special connection with a pet would feel like. Until I met Lunita. Not only is she an adorable shih tzu, but she also fervently responds to my voice. I just need to yell out “Lunita!” for her to come sprinting. It is not lost on me that I longed for that unique bond I now share with her. Deer & Boy earnestly captures this connection through an emotional journey of acceptance.

    When A Boy Runs Away

A boy runs from home in the middle of the night. Silently moving in the shadows, he avoids police patrol cars. Not much is explained about what made him do this. He suddenly finds a memorial. His body language shows it affects him deeply. After walking through what seems like an eternity, he finds a solitary bus stop. What’s that? A baby deer? His exhaustion does not let him get too excited. Come morning, his face is all over the news. The best course of action is to go into the woods. And so he finds the baby deer again. This is the prologue of Deer & Boy.

As a side-scrolling adventure, thinking that you have seen this kind of story before is common. But you have not. Developer Lifeline Games appears to be fully aware of the tropes of the genre and plays with it. What makes Deer & Boy a special experience is its balanced pacing. Initially, the boy can just hide, move around, and wait to act at the right time. Not long after, he can push and pull things. Platforming does the job well. Once he befriends the deer, he can command it to act in places he cannot reach. This is par for the course for games of its ilk, but the relationship between the titular characters is what keeps them going.

    Best Friends Forever

For right and wrong, that is. When the boy is in danger, the frightened wailings of the deer are heartbreaking. In that same vein, watching them celebrate after overcoming a difficult situation is cheerful. Small shows of affection go a long way when the world is this hostile. A game of this nature lives and dies by the repetition of its actions. This is where the measured sequences make it easy to see it through to the end. There is not a single chapter that feels overly long. The lack of dialogue insists on making you pay attention to their actions, making for a more rewarding narrative.

At first glance, Deer & Boy might look like a wholesome adventure where a deer and a boy become best friends destined to frolic in the forest forever. For those gravitating towards this game looking for that particular flavor of inoffensive storytelling, I would suggest searching elsewhere. But, for anyone able to handle darker tones with their cozy moments, this is a full recommendation. Without going deep into details, the tense situations that the pair get into are nail-biting at times. Never veering into horror, there are story beats that heighten the risks. The payoff is worth the rollercoaster.

That is mainly because of the game’s art direction. Its animated art style is pleasing to the eye. Walking a fine line between natural landscapes and manmade architecture, the cinematic framing of the player’s perspective inspires awe. As both the deer & boy are quite small, witnessing the world from their point of view makes everything all that more imposing. As video games go, this one knows exactly what it wants to be. Some compromises are made in order to create riveting set pieces, with the known drawbacks that come with it.

    Trial & Error

Because there are several chase sequences, knowing what to do at the right time will not always happen. The nature of failing these moments breaks the illusion briefly, but as quick as the game is to give into that black screen, so does it put players back into a fair checkpoint to try again. Then again, pulling off these elaborate scenes on the first try undoubtedly works best. Jumping at the right time to escape from falling debris in slow motion is an exciting contrast to the more methodical puzzles.

Deer & Boy’s soundtrack is one for the books. Weaving calm moments of silence to the tune of gentle violins while solving puzzles, affirming piano sounds at the precise eureka moment, and warm vocals that crescendo to orchestral arrangements all make for a beautiful journey. Of course, those life-threatening pursuits also sound as menacingly as the scene requires. What ends up making it as memorable as it is, is how it upends expectations by the third act. There is not much more I can say than that.

It is understandable when smaller indie studios focus on getting a video game out the door before anything. No bugs, no crashes, and we’re good to go. With that out of the way, I do hope that they consider adding accessibility features in the future, as some cutscenes require intricate button pressing that not all players may be able to replicate. It would be a shame if those interested in experiencing this bountiful tale were unable to due to technical limitations. To wrap up, the deer sporadically will not obey your orders. It’s minor, but it’s there. For the completionists, there is currently no option to choose which chapter to play in.

    Verdict: Deer & Boy

What a joy to discover when a game goes places you did not expect. From the outset, I thought this game would be an unassuming, cozy adventure about a young kid learning about nature. Oh, how I am glad to be wrong. Developer Lifeline Games has shared its film aspirations at length, and it shows. Deer & Boy is an emotional journey that leaves a mark. Its perfectly balanced pacing, heartwarming moments with its protagonists, and cinematic set pieces make for one of those gaming highlights you will thank yourself for playing.
