Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the first new entry in the classic Capcom series since 2006, has recieved a new release date. Capcom has announced that the title will now be available on September 4th, around 3 weeks before its originally announced release date, a rare example of a title’s release moving forward on the calendar and not back.

September became overly crowded this summer, along with the announcement of Onimusha‘s release date, as titles attempt to avoid the November release of Grand Theft Auto VI. Capcom itself has had several strong sales performances this year with titles like Resident Evil Requiem and Pragmata, which suggests Onimusha: Way of the Sword was in a good position even while surrounded by other titles. Control: Resonant, and Silent Hill: Townfall were both set to release the same week as it, making this move a strong strategic one all the same.

Pre-orders for Onimusha: Way of the Sword are available now. Players who pre-order or buy any of the three versions available for the title, Standard, Deluxe, or Premium Deluxe, by the original date of September 24th, will receive the early adopter bonuses as a reward. These bonuses include the Lion Dog Charm that grants a special effect when equipped, and the Sealed Curse Sword Appearance cosmetic. Players who save data from the Demo before September 4th will get the Kubi Akari Charm in the game upon release.

The game is detailed in an official blurb from Capcom, stating:

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the latest installment in Capcom’s classic Onimusha series. The first entry in 20 years, the all-new action game returns to a dark fantasy Japan where samurai clash with the supernatural. The story fuses history and myth, following the journey of Miyamoto Musashi, a samurai armed with a mystical Oni Gauntlet, as he battles demons invading Edo-period Kyoto. Onimusha: Way of the Sword features intense action that combines the series’ signature Issen and Soul Absorption mechanics with exhilarating swordplay that takes combat to new heights.

For players looking to get a handle on the game before the release, a demo for the title is available on all platforms. You can check out our thoughts on the demo here. Onimusha: Way of the Sword will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
