Sony has announced that the company will be holding not one, but two State of Play Presentations that will air later this week. This news was announced via a PlayStation Blog post in which the company revealed that these two events will be held on Thursday, September 3, beginning at 6 am PT / 9 am ET. These State of Play events will feature “updates and announcements from PlayStation Studios and our third-party partners,” as well as an “extended look at the vast world” of Final Fantasy VII Revelations, which is slated to release in 2027.
Immediately after this first State of Play, a State of Play Japan broadcast will also be aired. Yuki Kaji, the voice actor featured in Attack on Titan and Octopath Traveler 0, will return to hosting duty for the event, stating, “offer deep dives into upcoming games from game studios in Japan and Asia, including new gameplay, announcements, and more. Currently, it is unclear as to how long each event will last.
Final Fantasy VII Revelations would have been an obvious choice to appear during the State of Play, so it makes sense that they announced a deep dive into it. Sony currently has Marvel’s Wolverine set to release this month, so a final trailer could be in the cards. Beyond that, Sony has a few titles in the works that have been suggested to have a 2027 release, like God of War: Laufey and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, both of which could maybe show up, or even Until Dawn 2. Maybe we will find out if Fairgames is still happening.
Sony announced earlier this year that they will be discontinuing physical media for the PlayStation consoles as of 2028. This has led many to suspect that the PlayStation 6 will be released either late 2027 or early 2028, so this could be our first look, putting this coming year into some focus. That said, the current semiconductor chip shortage, fueled in part by the rise of AI, has put all companies into a place of uncertainty.
